In just two weeks time, the pricing and billing (BSS) worlds will congregate in London for their annual co-located conference. Both will share plenary sessions in order to benefit from an integrated view of the whole pricing and billing process.
One of the big topics will clearly be pricing ‘data’ – and hopefully how we get beyond this. Or at least find ways of making data simple to understand and manage.
An early speaker is Dr Ekkehard Stadie, Senior Partner, Simon Kucher & Partners, who will compare and contrast pricing strategies in other industries. He is preparing to “explain how they could be an inspiration for smarter pricing in the telecom sector. The pricing process encompasses strategy, model, level and implementation.”
He will examine examples where margins of 1,000 percent are possible and discuss the common but still relevant example of bottled water. As he points out “Most of the revenues with bottled water are generated in regions where tap water has perfect quality.” We prefer a glass of wine ourselves.

We have long believed that ‘data’, while a great enabler, is inherently confusing, open ended and therefore instils nervousness among customers. Many examples are appearing as operators attempt to solve the problem, and hopefully this event will be the perfect opportunity to take the discussions further.
Meanwhile the BSS stream boasts speakers such as Karim Gharib, Billing and Payment Manager, Etisalat who will present on the impact of the Internet of Things on BSS.
As he says, “the Internet of Things changes current business models and marketing trends. Currently our classic customers with their normal internet connections are replaced with millions of connected machines as well as new customers using mobile internet, as important as air. From a business perspective this is an opportunity for more and more revenues, however from BSS perspective it’s a huge challenge. Complex tariffs, huge traffic, customized products and time to market are the most important aspects that need focus from BSS owners and vendors…“
