Catch Up – Direct Operator Billing – Here, Now, and Making Money

In a recent survey by BillingViews, we discovered that 15 percent of American smartphone users are ready to try Direct Operator Billing (DOB) – in other words, one click, direct to phone bill or prepaid balance. Although not a huge percentage, it still equates to 30 million customers.

DOB is seen as a way of replacing revenues being eroded by the commoditisation of voice and SMS, and the OTT players making money and sharing none. Until recently this was a great theory.

In a recent webinar from Mobile Payments Today, BlueVia – part of Telefonica Digital – told us that their revenues from payments were up 300 percent and the number of purchases was also on the increase.

This, for us at BillingViews, was a tipping point, a moment when innovative operators prove that they add huge value to the digital universe.
